Small businesses compete with unemployment insurance in employing people during the economic crisis. People choosing between working for a small business or continuing to collect unemployment insurance are put in a precarious position. Long durations of unemployment by a large segment of the population are symptoms of a recession. However, continuing to feed the crisis by putting more support for unemployment insurance than for small businesses contributes to another problem that may not be revealed until later in the recession. The loss of many small businesses is a loss of their contributions. Small businesses contribute by providing new products that are not currently on the market. Small businesses contribute by providing competition to larger businesses causing larger businesses to improve their products and services. Small businesses contribute by providing innovation by introducing ideas on design, production, and marketing of new products and services. Small businesses contribute by providing research on subjects that can lead to new fields and discoveries. Products, competition, innovation, and research are essential components for an economy. These components drive local, national, and international trade. These components also facilitate business activity and opportunity. These components represent the heart of an economy and should be supported in the heart of a recovery effort.
